Today, Doug Ford is trying to take away power from the people of Ontario.

Taking away the option of ranked ballots makes our democracy worse. It reduces the political voice of voters. It reduces the likelihood of new people seeking to serve as elected representatives at the municipal level.

The only people who benefit from taking away ranked ballots are incumbent politicians.

Back in 2018, London was the only municipality in Ontario to implement ranked ballots (read more in this report from Unlock Democracy). Ranked ballots allowed tens of thousands of Londoners to rank their preferences for mayor and council elections. It worked well and it encouraged new people to run for council, including the first Black woman elected to London's city council

Kingston and Cambridge voted in 2018 to move ahead with ranked ballots in 2022.

It does cost a little bit more to collect much more information about who people support. That is the cost of a stronger local democracy.

The previous Liberal government empowered people by making ranked ballots an option at the municipal level. They gave people a choice. By taking that power away, by moving to collect less rather than more information from voters, Doug Ford is protecting incumbent politicians.

The Ontario PC Party itself uses ranked ballots. Doug Ford was elected Leader by a ranked ballot. If ranked ballots are good enough for his own party, surely they are good enough for the people of Ontario.

This change has been tacked on to the pandemic-related "Supporting Ontario's Recovery Act, 2020." If London is forced to switch back to first-past-the-post, we will incur new one-time costs.

It is clear that this move is really about stopping electoral reform from spreading.

Another, stealth, behind-the-scenes, decision by Ford WITHOUT any pubic consultation. He’s fundamentally

dishonest. We saw it in cutting Toronto’s council in half, we saw his overt lies about protecting the greenbelt, his concessions to developers in omnibus

Bill 108, his cuts to legal aid decried by Ontario’s

Chief Justice, his refusal to consider paid sick days

for the low wage, critical -services employees. He

dismisses debate and consultation. Despite his outward bravado, he’s “spineless” and prefers to

    legislate behind closed doors.

This is no time to step backwards on electoral reform. Doug Ford should remember he was elected leader on a ranked ballot!

This move is an indefensible bid to stifle the democratic voice of Ontario. Vote splitting is the crutch the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario is hobbled without, and they’re terrified of true representative democracy taking hold.

Ranked ballots are a way to get more diverse candidates onto city counsels. The Ford’s government attempt to shut down ongoing discussion in Ontario communities about adopting them without any public consultation is an insult to Ontario voters.

This is a blatant attack on democracy and the choices of Ontario voters who overwhelmingly passed municipal referendums to support ranked balloting. It is ridiculous for these changes to be tacked onto a bill meant to support workers, and the Ford government should be ashamed of themselves.

Ranched Choice Voting shouldn’t just be an option, but the standard. Taking away the choice to use ranked voting is not the kind of regressive policies we need

It is disappointing that this suggested change was included in among changes that will hopefully help assist COVID-19 recovery.

This is an unnecessary, unwarranted, unwanted curtailment of how municipal democracy should be conducted.
